Put the iPhone X, iPhone 8, & iPhone 8 Plus into DFU Mode in ITunes

Apple’s been working hard on making their phones without a home screen button. Finally, through the release of the iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, Apple made a full transition away from the home screen that’s been a feature on their iPhones for years. Though this is a huge feat for Apple, it also presents itself with some problems.

You may be thinking, “Hey, but iPhone 8 and 8 Plus still have home buttons,” and you’re completely right. Though, just like the iPhone 7 they serve no function when your device itself turned off as they’re ‘capacitive’. So, what happens when you want to put your iPhone into DFU mode? Well, it’s still possible, however, it simply means you’re going to have to use a different method in order to enter DFU mode.

For those of you wondering just what DFU mode is, DFU mode is short for Device Firmware Upgrade mode. In layman’s terms, it means that this mode is used to restore your iPhone if it’s unresponsive. Essentially, it restores your iPhone back to factory settings. Of course, this isn’t something you’re going to have to commonly use, however, when you need to use it, you’ll want to know what you’re going to have to do if your phone becomes bricked or glitchy.

Before we tell you how to activate DFU mode, you’ll need to know that when you restore an iOS device, you’ll be wiping your iPhone completely clean. Thus, you need to make sure that your data on your iPhone is backed. With that being said, let’s move onto teaching you how to put your iPhone into DFU mode.

Connect Your iPhone to Your Computer

Connect your iPhone to either your PC or MAC.Once it’s connected, you’ll want to launch your iTunes, that is if it didn’t show up on your screen already. You’ll want to make sure that your iPhone is synced to your iTunes and any updates that need to be made are done.

Put Your iPhone in DFU mode

Before we tell you how to put your iPhone in DFU mode, if you see that your iPhone boots or display “Connect to iTunes” on the screen, you need to go back to step one and reconnect your iPhone to your computer. Now that your iPhone is connected to your MAC or PC, complete the following steps.

  1. On your iPhone, quick-press the volume up button.
  2. Then, on your iPhone, quick-press the down button.
  3. Then, press and hold the side button until you see your screen go black.
  4. Once the screen blacks outs, you can release the side button.
  5. Then, quickly press and hold down both the side and volume buttons, keeping them held down for five seconds.
  6. After five seconds, you’ll want to release the side button, however, keep holding down the volume down button.
  7. Then, continue to hold down the volume down button for a minimum five seconds.

Though you’ve been focusing on your iPhone, you’ll want to divert your attention and now pay your attention to your computer. If you see an iPhone recovery prompt on your iTunes pop up, you’ll want to release the volume down button and then check the display screen on your iPhone. If your screen is black, this means you’ve successfully completed putting your iPhone in DFU mode.

Now that you’ve completed in putting your iPhone in DFU mode, you’ll want to hit “ok” to close the iTunes recovery prompt. Then it’ll continue to restore it back to factory settings by selecting “Restore iPhone” which will be found under iPhone Recovery Mode on your iTunes. Then, once it's fully restored, your iPhone will automatically exit itself out of DFU mode and will open its activation screen.

Exiting out of DFU Mode

You’ll want to exit DFU mode as safely as possible. In order to do that, follow these steps:

  1. Quick-press the volume up button.
  2. Then, quick-press the volume down button
  3. Once that’s complete, you’ll want to press and hold the side button down for at least ten seconds. You should see Apple’s boot screen appear and then you can release the buttons.

Once you completed this, your iOS 11 will start up and you’ll enter your password to unlock your iPhone.
