Having problems connecting to your Wi-Fi network? You’re not the only one. Unfortunately, iPhones are somewhat prone to issues when connecting to Wi-Fi networks that aren’t powered by routers that have been ‘Designed in Cupertino’, if you catch our drift.
Luckily for you, we’ve compiled the techniques that work the best for troubleshooting a spotty wireless network. Just follow these steps in order to determine whether or not the issue is related to your device’s hardware.
Turn Your Device’s Wi-Fi Off and On
This should be your go-to move if you’re having connection issues. Before doing anything else, try to simply turn off and back on your Wi-Fi. To do so, swipe up from the bottom of your screen which will open the control center. Once there, you’ll want to tap on the Wi-Fi icon which will turn it off. Wait 10 seconds and then tap the icon again to reactivate your Wi-Fi. To access your Wi-Fi, you can also go to “Settings”, tap on “Wi-Fi” and then tap the switch beside “Wi-Fi”. If that doesn’t fix the issue then continue reading below.
Turn off Your Bluetooth
Your iPhone’s Bluetooth could be another reason as to why your Wi-Fi isn’t working properly. Believe it or not, Bluetooth can sometimes cause an interference with the Wi-Fi connection. So, to see if the problem is Bluetooth, you’ll want to deactivate it. To do so, swipe up from the bottom of your screen which will take you to Control Center. Once you’ve done that, Tap the Bluetooth icon and you’ll turn it off. You can also access this by going to Settings, tapping on General and then turning off your Bluetooth.
Toggle Airplane Mode
Come back from a trip, recently? Listen, we’ve all forgotten to turn off Airplane Mode — it’s really nothing to be ashamed of, really. If Airplane Mode is on, your phone won’t be able to connect to any network. But, if you turn this off, your problem will be immediately solved.
To do so, you’ll want to go into Settings and turn Airplane mode on. Then, you’ll want to wait 3 seconds before turning it back on. Once you’ve done this, try to connect to your Wi-Fi network once again.
Toggle Wi-Fi Assistant
If you have iOS 10 installed on your iPhone, then you might know about the Wi-Fi Assist feature introduced in iOS 9. With this feature, you’ll be able to secure a stable internet connection in no time. What’s great about this feature is that even if you have Wi-Fi but the connection is slow, your device will automatically switch you to cellular. Wi-Fi Assist solves many of the Wi-Fi connection issues that are frequent in iPhones. To activate this feature, you’ll want to go to settings, then tap on Cellular. Scroll down the screen turn “Wi-Fi Assist” on and then back off.
Restart Your iPhone
Sometimes your phone just needs a reboot. To reboot completely, you’ll want to press and hold down the sleep/wake button. A “slide to power off” button will appear on the screen, slide it to turn off the phone. Wait a couple seconds, press and hold the sleep/wake button to turn your phone back on.
Forget the Wi-Fi Network
If you’re still having problems, try to forget the Wi-Fi network and connect to it again. Simply go to Settings, tap on Wi-Fi and then tap on the information button (i) that’s beside the network you’re currently connected to. Then press “forget this network” and confirm your action. Once that’s done, try to connect back to the network by pressing on it and entering the password.
Check Your Router and Modem
Sometimes the problem isn’t with your phone, it’s with your router and modem — so give it the ol’ restart! Unplug your router and modem and wait for 30 seconds. Plug them back in, wait a couple minutes and then try to reconnect to your Wi-Fi.
