Now that the Android Oreo update is coming out on the OnePlus 5, you’re probably pretty excited, at least if you’re anything like we are that is — proud geeks and OnePlus 5 owners. Now before you get pumped about updating your OS, you should know that this is a beta, meaning that there may be bugs and errors which Google hasn’t gotten around to yet. If you’re going to download the beta, make sure you backup your phone and are able to downgrade in case the worst happens. It’s better to be safe than sorry!
With that mini-disclaimer out there, let’s explain how to update to Android Oreo on your OnePlus 5 device, shall we?
The first thing you’ll need is to download OxygenOS. Yes, it’s not technically the same version of Android which ships out of Mountain View every year, but it’s pretty darn close. Furthermore, it’s the only officially supported Android fork for OnePlus devices. In any case, follow the steps below in order to get started.
How to Download OxygenOS
Before using your flash on your device, read these instructions. If you have any problems, we recommend that you contact their customer support for further assistance.
You’ll want to download the software for your device which you can find here at the bottom of the page.Once that’s completed, plug your phone into your computer and copy the downloaded zip file to your phone’s storage. If you have a Mac, then to complete this, you’ll need to use an Android File Transfer.
Once you copied the zip file to your phone, you’ll need to reboot your phone into recovery mode. This means you’ll want to turn off your phone and then turn it back on while holding the power and volume down button at the same time.
Your phone will reboot and you’ll see “Install from internal storage/Install from local,” you’ll find the zip file and then click on “Install” to confirm the process.
Now, your phone is going to update to the selected build and then reboot itself again to take you to OxygenOS.

Thus, OnePlus makes it clear on their site that, “these builds are sometimes NOT as stable as our official OTAs generally are. By installing this update, you accept the potential risks of data loss.” In conclusion, if you’re worried about potentially losing your data on your device, then we recommend that you make sure you backup all important information prior to downloading this build on your device.
