Crossy Road seems to be the next big thing in mobile gaming. And weโre not talking about some average game that will be forgotten someday soon. (Like that one game, umm. Hmm. I think it was DoodleCraft?) Weโre talking about dining at the head table with mobile royalty like Angry Birds and Temple Run. Plus, Iโve already reviewed many Crossy Road imitators, always a sign that youโve made it. Another sign that youโve made it? Having crossovers with other properties. Is this Crossover Road worth playing? (Ah man that was lame.) Letโs take a look.
The Basics
Now, I must admit I was a bit skeptical going into Disney Crossy Road. Donโt get me wrong, I love all things Disney. However, mobile games tend to have a bit of a bad track record with crossover tie-ins. Games like Angry Birds tend to have plenty of crossovers with other properties. However, much of the time it comes off as less of an interesting crossover and more like slapping a new coat of paint on an established game. In this particular game, though, the coat of paint is Disney. Which is a pretty good color. Letโs see if Disney Crossy Road breaks that trend.
The Gameplay
Basically, itโs your standard Crossy Road experience but in various Disney universes. The gameplay itself is completely unchanged, at least from what I can tell. Instead of cars rolling by youโll have pianos from the Haunted Mansion. Instead of Crossy Road music you get Mickeyโs theme music. Instead of logs youโll have …something from Zootopia. Iโm not sure. I havenโt seen that movie yet.
Is It Fun?
OK, I admit, itโs pretty much just the same gameplay with a new look. However, there is one great addition that separates it from the others: collecting various Disney characters as playable, well, characters. And weโre not talking about just Mickey and Minnie. I got some obscure ones. How obscure? Does the gargoyle from Hunchback Of Notre Dame ring a bell? No? Exactly.
The Bottom Line
Does this game do enough to justify downloading it instead of the original? Kind of. On the one hand thereโs not enough changed to the gameplay to really make it a new game at all. On the other hand, I could see how one would get addicted to the quest to collect each Disney character. On the other other hand, itโs free. Is that too many hands? Whatever. Just try the game out for yourself.
