I am going to finally get this off my chest: golf is very, very difficult. First off, you have to be outside. And no one in their right mind wants that. Secondly, you’ve got to dress in those nice golf clothes. Which is very difficult. Finally, you’ve got to precisely hit a very small ball into a very small hole. Which is just impossible. So, needless to say, I do not play golf. But I do play golf video games. Which is nice. So let’s talk about Flick Golf Island for iOS devices.
The Basics
Now, many types of sports can be very difficult to translate into game form. Sometimes games will simply give a meter of power and preciseness to hit a ball perfectly, such as in many baseball games. Other times, it’s all about physics and momentum, like many motion sensor and touch controlled games. And, other times, it’s just a button that you mash. Like a lot of boxing games. Needless, to say, this is not one of those games. In fact, Flick Golf Island is all about flicking. Which I’m sure you could have figured out. So let’s move on.
The Gameplay
Flick Golf Island is strangely similar to actual golf, in that it’s all about self control. And I am no good at self control. You simply need to swipe the ball in order to get close to the hole, and further swipe in order to guide it the right way. Which, I must say is a pretty welcome touch. Because, from what I can tell, you can’t do that in real life.
Is It Fun?
While golf games must not be easy to make interesting, I like the way Flick Golf Island went about it. Being able to swipe after your initial drive saves the game from being a simple game of flicking and hoping you didn’t hit the ball too hard. Weirdly enough, it wasn’t the gameplay that initially interested me when it came to Flick Golf Island. It was the graphics. I can honestly say this is one of the greatest looking 3D games I’ve seen on a mobile device. Everything’s bright, beautiful, and charming. So, even when I hit the ball right into the water, it still looked great. Even if it didn’t feel great.
The Bottom Line
Even if the game was basically unplayable, I would recommend it purely based on its gorgeous visuals. However, the game is very playable. So go ahead and play it. You have my permission.
