Camera apps are a pretty interesting subgenre on the app store. From the outside looking in, you'd think there’s no real reason to download a camera app if you’ve already got one. Well, usually I’d say excellent point. However, some camera apps have an extra gimmick that make it worth the download. And today, we’re taking a look at how to use one of those apps. One of those apps called BitCam. That was not my best segue.

What Is BitCam?

BitCam is a camera app that uses a very distinct 8/16-bit filter to give photos a retro appearance. The app, which links directly to your camera, only shoots photos in black and white at first. However, if you’d like to add a bit of color to your newly taken retro photos, you can spend a little cash to add some vibrancy. If you’re into that kind of thing.

How Do You Use It?

BitCam is a very simple app to use. After you open up the app, it looks like your basic camera app with a retro filter added on. You snap photos and can upload and share directly from there. Or you can delete the photo and retake it because somebody decided to blink just as soon as you took the picture. (Don’t get me started.) Additionally, you have a few options for different appearances, such as cleaner photos or chunkier 8-bit looking photos.

Should You Get It?

While originally I had low opinions of camera apps that aren’t already included on your phone, I had a great time with BitCam. The filters included on the app were fun to play with, and I was especially delighted to find out you can use it on the front-facing camera as well. Not that I just took a selfie with it and made it my profile picture.
